Representation in movies is what will bring awareness to people. Even though, there are several movies centered on the LGBT community the numbers are still low. Most movies have LGBT representations, but it is often satirical. In this post, I will explore furthermore the subject.
In this article, (https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/25/15690404/glaad-lgbtq-representation-film-not-getting-better) by Kaitlyn Tiffany, Hollywood is giving the impression that they are trying but they barely are. Every year, GLAAD releases a report on LGBTQ representation in movies nowadays, and the numbers are miserable. The numbers barely increased since 2015 and even worsen when divided into more specific demographics.
According to Kaitlyn Tiffany, the overall, representation of lesbian, gay, transgender, or queer characters was slightly higher in 2016 than 2015. Each year, the movie industry produces for a more diverse audience. We live in a consumerism society and frequently the producers listen to the audience’s requests. GLAAD reports that 18.4 percent of the industry’s top 125 films included a LGBTQ character. Yet, gay men are the most represented. There is still a monopoly of men characters. Movies with a female lead are often overshadowed by the actors as the characters development often revolve around them. Films with a transgender character played by a transgender actor/actress are starting to gain recognition. For example, in 2018 the movie ‘Una mujer fantastica’ won an Oscar and the main role was a transgender woman. And, transgendered men are underrepresented; there are barely movies or characters about them. Hollywood is still very patriarchal, most major studios are owned by upper-class Caucasian men.
Racial diversity in films with LGBTQ representation decreased in 2016. This shows the type of audience that the industry is targeting.
DISNEY PERFORMED THE WORST OF ALL THE MAJOR STUDIOS
Often LGBT characters are put in a box and only few attributes are given to them, they are basically there to fill up space. Disney often has a young target as an audience and they repeatedly uses this as an excuse to exclude lesbians, gays, queer or transgender persona.
To write a good character that will trigger empathy is the main issue with Hollywood. They must be willing to give chances to LGBTQ writers who already embodies the community to be as relevant as possible.
On the opposite, GLAAD found that the representation on TV is better than in cinema. Television put more emphasis on transgender and bisexual representation which are often forgotten by the industry.
